About In Vivo Scientific

In Vivo Scientific was founded in 2005 by Michael Ward M.D., PhD along with Barney and Kellie Boyce. Dr. Ward was doing neuronal research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis where he purchased a microscope to do long term live cell microscopy. Dr. Ward’s images continually went in and out of focus do to temperature fluctuations. Dr. Ward tested numerous systems and found all of them lacking the ability to regulate temperature evenly across the full field of an 18mm cover slip. He found that the only way to truly regulate the temperature was to create a system where all of the air flowed in the same direction.

Why In Vivo Scientific? Dr Ward, working at 60x oil with a very difficult specimen was unable to keep his specimen in focus for long periods of time utilizing a number of different environmental chambers. The problem was a fluctuation in temperature across his specimen, even though his neurons were grown on an 18mm coverslip. In that small of an area, he was seeing a fluctuation of a degree or more. To resolve this issue, Dr. Ward created a directed airflow that significantly reduced the heat fluctuations of other chambers. He also decided to use 3/8” acrylic which has 50% greater thermal properties than ¼” that is commonly used. Lastly, he decided to make the wrap out of one piece so the tinsel strength of the box would be greater and by bending the wrap it would also be more elegant.
Stage Top Incubators
After the huge success of the full enclosure, In Vivo Scientific wanted to fill a niche that they had been missing, the stage top incubator. Dr. Ward wanted to incorporate many of the same features of the full enclosure while once again improving on standard stage top designs. What was critical to him was that the environment completely sealed with no outside atmosphere able to permeate the environment. He also wanted to utilize InVivo’s proprietary humidification design that is significantly more sterile than other environments. He insisted the water bath be in the environment to allow for a higher degree of humidity and lastly he wanted the controller to be completely digital. This digital control allowed for very tight specifications on heat, gases and flow control of these gases.

Microscope Stages
In Vivo Scientific has coupled with Automated Lab Solutions to provide a high precision encoded scanning stage within the United States to our direct customers as well as our valued dealers. This will become one of the centerpieces of a soon to be introduced product from In Vivo Scientific that will enable our customers to purchase a full imaging system with incubation at incredible pricing. ALS is a German manufacturer of precision instrumentation and In Vivo Scientific is excited to develop our new product utilizing their automated parts. Stay tuned for our product introduction!!!
In Vivo Scientific has introduced our "Panther" box for bioluminescence. This is a light tight box with an EMCCD camera attached to the top to record bioluminescence light over 4-7 day periods in both cultured dishes and live animals. We have attached our "laminar airflow" designed incubation to the box to allow for very precise temperature control. We have automated the Z axis of the stage for both long distance and high mag imaging. The lens has also been automated making focus at all planes very simple. The internal chamber has LED lights to assist while loading and preparing the sample. The control box has 4 presets for the stage movement along with the ability to fine tune the movement for exact positioning. The Panther takes our black incubation chambers for microscopes to new levels in a very affordable system.
